Blog 2: Cultural Differences and Global Leadership.

As I prepared for the study abroad experience in London, the predeparture module opened my eyes to the significant differences in hospitality, leadership, and communication between the United States and the United Kingdom. While I thought that there were going to be cultural differences, the depth of them surprised me.

One of the most surprising ones was the reserved nature of British hospitality. While Americans tend to be more expressive and casual, British service is rooted in discretion, formality and professionalism. It often emphasizes quietness over friendliness.

This challenged my initial assumption that great hospitality always involves high energy and outgoing personalities. I now see that different cultures define exceptional service in different ways, and that adapting to these expectations is essential to create a meaningful experience for the guests.

The leadership style in the United Kingdom differs greatly with what I have experienced in the United States. In the United Kingdom everyone is more cooperative, often leading through quiet influence rather than direction, while in the United States, there is more individuality, more assertiveness, where charisma is often emphasized. This means that they prioritize team cohesion and empowering staff, without any confrontation.

To succeed in London, I’ll need to adapt my communication style, since I would have to be more respectful and observant, listening carefully to correctly communicate with others who might value indirect forms of communication. Some strategies that will help me include: active listening, adjusting my tone, and being culturally curious, which will help me communicate better and make sure that I can show my awareness and professionalism.

What I’m most curious to observe in real time is how British hospitality professionals balance tradition with innovations. I want to see how they maintain consistent guest satisfaction while staying true to their norms.

To prepare mentally and professionally, I have been reflecting on my own communication habits, and researching some terminology that might be helpful to know. I am ready and excited to experience London’s hospitality, since i see this opportunity as the perfect way to expand my global perspective and refine some skills that are critical in international hospitality.
