ENTERTAINMENT DEPARTMENT EXPERIENCE

In addition to the other memorable insights i’ve gained, I also had the opportunity to work/shadow in the entertainment sector of Beaches Resort. My involvement in the entertainment department and observations have shown that management in the hospitality and tourism industry isn’t a 9 to 5 job because the tasks and responsibilities never stop. The love that each employee has for their work, however, enables them to work with the passion of their complete team and love for what they do to engage, curate, and entertain each guest. Being able to assist the younger children in taking part in trivia and dancing to the music was one of the most memorable experience because Jamaica is a land known for not only it’s food but its music, so I have always loved helping people and dancing and this will stay with me forever.

WATERSPORTS DEPARTMENT EXPERIENCE

Starting with this week of study in Jamaica, it has been a memorable and educational experience. From recognizing the most well-known departments when I first arrived to seeing, working in, and realizing that there are a lot more departments than even visitors are aware of. It is frequently said that doing work you enjoy makes it not feel like work. I thus had the chance to engage in water sports and entertainment for this trip. There is a lot more going on behind the scenes in these areas than what we can see, such as the administrative and logistical aspects of things. In water sports i had the chance to take the diving course and see the background work that goes on beyond just getting in the ocean to dive, but there has to be a diving instructor. I’ve also learnt about PADI, which stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors which is a recreational diving membership and diver training organization.

The sandals foundation strongly believes in giving back to the community, and so do I. We brought numerous school supplies, games, and sanitary items to donate to different schools within the community.

The foundation team was so grateful and excited. We began setting the things up on the table. Both parties exchange gratitude for the gifts and the opportunity to give.

All good things must come to an end. To say our goodbyes we had a departing dinner with the managers the night before we departed. We were allowed to express gratitude for allowing us to gain exceptional experience from their team. The staff made it feel like a home away from home.

During this time, we watch the video of the team put together of our entire week. I was ready to cry, lol. The team, my classmates, Professor Dodge and Dawn and of course myself  made this trip a success. On the last day, we received handwritten cards from the staff wishing us success as we continued our journey at FIU. This was such a memorial moment.

The second department I chose to work with was the environmental health and safety department. This department ensures that the hotel runs effectively under government laws. They are in charge of ensuring the resort has all the proper licensing to operate the business. Furthermore, they provide alternative ways to maintain their earth check status. The manager Jardine also told us some methods the hotel uses to recycle, such as collecting plastic water bottles. They also sell the shredded paper to local companies that may need it. We also learned about their waste management procedures.

After speaking about the department’s responsibility, I conducted two audits. These audits occurred at the kids’ camp and the nurses’ station. After completing this task, I gain more insight into safety and what they do in the department. I enjoyed doing this as I did hands-on work alongside the manager. The best part of it was that she gave me a mango. So delicious and juicy!
