Why I chose the FIU Study Abroad Program

The rooms division is one of the most important parts of a resort operation because it directly affects guest comfort, safety, and satisfaction. While guests often focus on visible experiences such as entertainment, restaurants, and beach activities, many of the elements that create a positive stay happen behind the scenes. Departments such as housekeeping, laundry, and environmental health and safety play a critical role in maintaining the standards that guests expect. During my visit to Beaches Resort in Turks and Caicos, it became clear that these operations are essential in shaping the overall guest experience.

One of the first things I noticed during my stay was the high level of cleanliness in the guest rooms. The rooms were very clean when I arrived, and housekeeping services were provided twice a day. In addition to the regular daily cleaning, the staff also provided turndown service in the evening. Towels were replaced regularly, the minibar was restocked, and the room always smelled fresh. These details contributed to a sense of comfort and relaxation, which is very important for guests staying at a resort. Knowing that the room was consistently cleaned made the stay feel more enjoyable and allowed me to fully relax during my visit.

Although guests may not see the laundry department directly, its impact can be noticed throughout the resort. During my stay, the linens and bedding were always clean and fresh. This reflects the efficiency of the resort’s laundry operations. I also noticed that fresh towels were placed by the pools every morning. Throughout the day, staff members continued replacing used towels with clean ones so guests always had access to fresh towels. This level of consistency shows how important laundry operations are in supporting guest comfort and maintaining service quality across the resort.

Environmental health and safety practices were also visible in many areas of the property. Staff members were consistently cleaning public spaces, especially in the mornings when the resort was preparing for a new day of activities. Around the pool area, staff picked up used plates and cups left by guests to maintain a clean environment. I also observed bartenders and restaurant staff cleaning their countertops after preparing drinks. These actions may seem small, but they play an important role in maintaining hygiene and creating a professional environment for guests.

Consistency across the resort was another aspect that stood out during my visit. The rooms were always cleaned on time, and public areas throughout the property were well maintained. Whether walking through restaurants, the pool area, or other shared spaces, it was clear that the resort places a strong emphasis on maintaining cleanliness and organization. This level of operational consistency helps build trust between the resort and its guests because visitors know they can expect the same high standards during their entire stay.

The importance of these operational standards is supported by industry research. According to the NetSuite article “What Is the Hotel Guest Life Cycle? The Five Stages of a Guest’s Journey,” cleanliness and safety standards play a significant role in shaping guest perceptions throughout the entire guest journey. From arrival to departure, consistent service and well-maintained facilities influence guest satisfaction, online reviews, and overall brand reputation. My experience at Beaches Resort reflects this concept because the consistent cleanliness of both the rooms and public areas contributed to a very positive perception of the resort.

Another industry resource from FacilitiesNet, “5 Reasons to Adopt Facility Management Standards,” explains that implementing facility management standards helps organizations improve operational efficiency, maintain safety, and ensure consistency across a property. When resorts follow these standards, departments such as housekeeping, maintenance, and environmental health teams can work together to maintain the quality and safety that guests expect.

From a guest perspective, the condition of the room plays a major role in the overall resort experience. Personally, I value cleanliness very highly, so the condition of the room made me feel comfortable and safe throughout my stay. The attention to detail from housekeeping staff showed how much effort goes into maintaining these standards, even though much of the work happens behind the scenes.

If I were managing the rooms division at a resort like Beaches Turks and Caicos, my top priorities would be maintaining strong cleanliness standards, conducting regular safety inspections, and ensuring guest satisfaction. Cleanliness standards are essential because they directly impact guest comfort and trust. Safety inspections are necessary to ensure that facilities remain safe and well maintained. Finally, guest satisfaction should always remain the main focus because the goal of the rooms division is to create an environment where guests feel comfortable, safe, and valued.

This experience reinforced how valuable experiential learning can be for hospitality students. Being able to interact directly with resort leaders and observe operations in a real-world setting helped me better understand the level of coordination, leadership, and service excellence required to operate a successful all-inclusive resort. Opportunities like this allow students to learn beyond the classroom by seeing how hospitality concepts are applied in practice. This study abroad program strengthened my professional goals and motivated me to continue developing the skills needed to build a successful career in the hospitality industry.
