Leadership, Careers & Integration: From Experience to Professional Pathways

My study abroad experience at Beaches Resort in Turks and Caicos gave me a deeper understanding of how a large resort operates as an interconnected system. While guests often focus on individual aspects of their stay, such as the beach, entertainment, or restaurants, it became clear that the guest experience is created through the collaboration of many departments working together. Observing how these departments communicate and support each other helped me better understand the importance of leadership, teamwork, and organizational culture in hospitality operations.

One example that demonstrated the connection between departments occurred during my stay when the closet door in our room became stuck. The front desk quickly coordinated with the engineering department to have the issue fixed. This interaction showed how important communication between departments is in maintaining a smooth guest experience. Even small issues require collaboration between teams to ensure that problems are resolved quickly and efficiently. I also noticed how security supported operations across the property by maintaining a safe environment for guests and employees. Their presence throughout the resort helped reinforce the idea that safety is an essential part of hospitality operations.

Leadership also played an important role in shaping the culture of the resort. During the program, I had the opportunity to meet Orville, who spoke about his passion for hospitality and the importance of focusing on the guest experience. What stood out to me the most was how he interacted with guests by greeting them and acknowledging their presence. This demonstrated how leaders set the tone for service standards within the organization. When leaders show genuine care for guests, it encourages employees to follow the same approach.

Another individual who stood out was Curtis. He demonstrated a strong commitment to service by assisting with multiple tasks throughout the resort. He helped drive guests around the property, cleared tables, and attended to guest needs when necessary. Seeing someone perform multiple roles while maintaining a positive attitude highlighted the importance of flexibility and teamwork in hospitality operations. Employees who are willing to support different areas of the resort help ensure that the overall guest experience remains smooth and consistent.

The overall culture among the staff also stood out during my visit. Many employees appeared happy and motivated, and it seemed like there was a strong sense of teamwork among them. This positive work environment likely contributes to the quality of service that guests receive. When employees feel supported and connected to their workplace, they are more likely to provide better service to guests.

Industry research also supports the idea that leadership and organizational culture play a significant role in hospitality success. According to the Skift article “New Report: How Hospitality Brands Are Earning Loyalty Across the Journey,” successful hospitality brands focus on creating strong connections with guests throughout every stage of their experience. This includes not only providing quality services but also ensuring that employees are engaged and motivated to deliver excellent service.

Another article from Skift, “The Biggest Innovators in Travel and Hospitality,” highlights how strong leadership and innovative thinking helped many hospitality companies adapt and maintain guest trust during challenging times. Organizations that invest in leadership development and employee engagement are better equipped to maintain consistent service and build long-term guest loyalty.

Through this study abroad program, I gained a better understanding of how different departments connect to support the guest experience. I also learned how leadership and organizational culture influence the way employees perform their roles. Observing these interactions helped me see how complex resort operations can be and how important teamwork is in maintaining high service standards.

This experience also helped me reflect on my own career goals. After seeing how a large resort operates, I can see myself working in a luxury resort environment, particularly in food and beverage operations. I enjoy the fast-paced environment and the opportunity to interact with guests while creating memorable experiences.

Overall, this study abroad experience provided valuable insight into the hospitality industry and the leadership skills required to manage large resort operations. By observing how departments collaborate, how leaders influence organizational culture, and how employees work together to deliver exceptional service, I gained a stronger understanding of what it takes to succeed in hospitality management.
