During the FIU Hospitality study abroad program at Beaches Turks & Caicos, I had the chance to observe how facilities and operations support the guest experience behind the scenes. Departments like Engineering & Maintenance, Information Technology, Security, Landscaping, and Stores work together to ensure the resort runs safely, smoothly, and sustainably. What struck me most is how essential these systems are, even though most guests never see them. From functioning air conditioning and reliable Wi-Fi to beautiful grounds and secure spaces, these operations directly impact guest comfort and satisfaction.
The Engineering & Maintenance team is critical to keeping rooms, pools, and common areas in perfect working order. During our visit, I noticed staff performing inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs without disrupting guests. Even small issues, like a water stain on the wall, was fixed within days. Preventive maintenance ensures the resort operates seamlessly, making the experience feel effortless for guests. Information Technology also plays a key role. IT systems manage check-in, reservations, in-room entertainment, and connectivity. Reliable Wi-Fi, functioning room controls, and smooth transactions at restaurants and bars are essential to a positive stay. Without strong IT infrastructure, even a luxury resort can feel frustrating to guests. Observing the IT team showed me how technology is central to modern hospitality and guest satisfaction. Security and landscaping, while less visible, also affect comfort and safety. Security personnel monitor entrances, patrol grounds, and respond to incidents, providing peace of mind. Landscaping creates visually appealing spaces that enhance guest enjoyment, encouraging them to spend time outdoors. Stores and inventory teams ensure that all departments have the supplies they need, keeping operations running efficiently without guest disruption.
From a managerial perspective, it’s clear that leaders don’t need to perform technical tasks themselves but must understand how these systems work. At Beaches Turks & Caicos, managers coordinate across departments, prioritize preventive maintenance, and balance operational efficiency with guest satisfaction. They anticipate challenges, allocate resources, and maintain communication between teams. Without this oversight, even well-trained staff might struggle to deliver consistent experiences. The Hospitality Technology article on top trends emphasizes that operational systems and preventive maintenance directly influence guest comfort, safety, and brand reliability. Similarly, Hotel Technology News highlights how smart technology can streamline operations from check-in to check-out, allowing staff to focus on service while ensuring smooth facility management. Both readings reinforce that managers must understand facilities and IT, even if they are not performing technical tasks themselves.
If I were overseeing facilities and operations at the resort, my priorities would focus on guest satisfaction, cost control, and sustainability. For satisfaction, I would emphasize preventive maintenance, proactive problem-solving, and efficient IT support. For cost control, I would use data-driven resource management to reduce waste without compromising service. For sustainability, I would implement environmentally responsible practices such as energy-efficient equipment, water conservation, and sustainable landscaping, reflecting broader industry trends. All of which are things I noticed this resort is already doing.
Observing facilities and operations at Beaches Turks & Caicos showed me that these departments are the foundation of the guest experience. Guests may never see the daily work of engineers, IT specialists, security personnel, or landscaping teams, but their efforts shape every aspect of comfort, safety, and satisfaction. This experience gave me a new appreciation for operational complexity and reinforced how strong managerial oversight is essential for both guest satisfaction and a resort’s long-term success.
