Daily Reflection 2 – Front-of-House & Guest Experience

Front of house departments play a major role in shaping the guest experience at a luxury resort. During my stay at Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort, I noticed how multiple guest facing teams worked together to make the experience feel smooth and welcoming. From the moment we arrived, the front desk staff created a positive first impression. They were friendly, welcoming, and seemed to recognize many of us guests from FIU throughout the stay. Every time we walked through the lobby, someone would greet us, which made the environment feel personal and warm. Small interactions like that may seem simple, but they play a big role in how guests remember their stay.

Front-of-house departments such as the front desk, butler services, loyalty and travel teams, and Club Sandals all contribute to the overall guest experience. Even though guests might only interact with one employee at a time, there is clearly a lot of communication happening behind the scenes. These departments have to coordinate constantly to make sure everything runs smoothly and that guest needs are handled quickly. Seeing how organized everything felt as a guest made it clear that strong teamwork and communication are essential in a luxury hospitality environment.

One moment that really stood out during the trip involved a maintenance issue in our room. When we first arrived, our toilet seat was a little loose, and as the trip went on it basically came off the hinges. We let the front desk know about the problem, and by the time we returned to our room later that day it had already been fixed. From our perspective, it felt like the issue was handled almost instantly. All we saw was the front desk saying they would take care of it, and when we got back it was as if nothing had been wrong in the first place. Even though guests mainly interact with front of house staff, situations like this show how front of house and back of house departments work together to solve problems efficiently.

From a managerial perspective, maintaining this level of service requires strong systems behind the scenes. Employee training, communication tools, and clear service standards all help ensure that every guest receives consistent and high quality service. Staff members need to know exactly how to respond when a guest raises a concern and how to quickly communicate with other departments to resolve the issue. Resorts like Beaches rely on regular staff training and clear service expectations so that employees understand how to provide both efficient and personalized service. These systems help ensure that even small issues are handled quickly and professionally.

The assigned reading from Hospitality Net discusses the idea of service design, which focuses on intentionally planning the people and processes that shape the customer experience. The article explains that from the first interaction with a business to the moment a guest leaves, every step should aim to exceed expectations. It also emphasizes that employees must understand why their role is important and how their actions impact the guest experience. I think this concept was clearly reflected during my stay because the staff consistently worked to make guests feel comfortable and supported. Even when we experienced travel issues, the resort staff helped us reorganize our plans and assisted us quickly, which made the situation much less stressful.

If I were managing one of the front of house departments, I would focus on continuing to strengthen communication between teams while also encouraging employees to provide personalized service. Guests appreciate when staff remember their names or recognize them during their stay, so creating opportunities for those connections is important. I would also prioritize empowering employees to solve problems quickly without needing too many approvals from management. This would allow issues to be resolved even faster and help maintain the smooth experience that guests expect at a luxury resort.

Overall, this experience showed me how important service design and teamwork are in creating a seamless guest experience. When front of house departments communicate well and focus on guest satisfaction, even small issues can be handled quickly, allowing guests to relax and fully enjoy their stay.
