A few notable things that I noticed during the back-of-house tour that would be defined as “luxury” would be the staff rooms. Typically, in a hotel, the staff room is really rundown and not the most aesthetically pleasing room. In the hotel we were staying at, we were able to see some of the back-of-house rooms as well, the area where they store the luggage if someone comes too early, and it was not the nicest looking. When I used to work at a luxury condominium, it was the same thing; the staff room was not the best looking, nor did it really have working AC despite it being a luxury location. However, when we were doing the back-of-house tour in The Savoy, their back-of-house staff areas were quite nice and kept clean. Their kitchens were quite small, however, they were still clean and well-maintained. I was saying that was a true expression of luxury. That not only are the areas seen by the public well-kept and maintained, but also the areas that the public doesn’t see. Another contribution that showed an elevated status, and though some may see it as minor, is the relationships between fellow employees. They seemed to get along and always said a greeting to one another, even if it was passing by. Having a good company culture is essential to increasing guest satisfaction since they will be working as a team to ensure that the guests are happy. A challenge that seemed to me would be the size of the kitchen, considering they have a few restaurants in-house, it is a small kitchen, which can cause a hazard. The Victoria & Albert Museum also illustrated a deep sense of history and England’s culture. It also showcases a lot of works that England was able to “gather” from different parts of the world. As a future manager, I would want to create a safe and comfortable work environment where my employees can thrive and be courteous to one another. While workplace drama and things of that nature are inevitable, there is still a way to minimize them and to make the employees happy. Happy and engaged employees are more likely to provide an elevated amount of care rather than one who is there only for a paycheck. A way to make sure of that is making their areas of back-of-house comfortable, to provide a comfortable area where they can take a breather and their a break.
