Luxury in action
Visiting the Savoy Hotel in London was an incredible experience. We got to see the back of the hotel and gained an overview of how everything works. The most significant aspect was the hotel’s history. “Luxury” was defined in every aspect of the hotel, from the way the staff greeted us at the entrance to our surprise upon entering the lobby due to the hotel’s beauty. The details, the sophistication, everything was stunning. Furthermore, the staff were incredibly courteous, always smiling and greeting us with a hello. While inside the Savoy, you could feel warmth and luxury, and it all started with the employees.
Guest Experience vs Operational Reality
Behind the scenes, the guest experience is meticulously planned and executed. Luxury hotels manage guest experience through various technological systems and train their staff exceptionally to provide the stellar service that guests expect and pay for. Moreover, we had the chance to visit the behind-the-scenes kitchens and saw how the kitchen staff and the front-of-house servers work together to ensure accurate timing and coordination. Additionally, they work almost nonstop, always preparing for the next step, whether it is afternoon tea, lunch, or dinner. In hospitality, every element of the operation is planned so the guest never notices the work behind the magic.
However, maintaining this level of service presents specific issues. The most significant one is the employees because everything relies on having a great staff that constantly delivers excellence. For that to happen, it all starts with establishing a great culture in the work environment and treating and taking care of your employees, who will, in return, treat and care for your guests.
Design & Culture
The visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum provided me with more insights into the role of design and culture in hospitality. It was demonstrated in the art, history, and exhibitions we got the chance to see.
Intention is what unites luxury branding and cultural storytelling. It helps generate emotion and connection, leaving a lasting memory. It focuses on originality, detail, and a thorough understanding of the people they are targeting. Luxury hospitality often tells the story of the cultures it serves, whether through a hotel or the arts.
Your Industry Takeaway
As I progress in my career, I have come to realize the value of intentionality. It is to provide the guests with an unforgettable moment and stay. When service, design, and storytelling come together, guests have a more meaningful experience. Ultimately, consistency, care, and connection are what true luxury embodies and what will further enhance the guest experience.
