Blog 5: The Power of Place, Thames River Cruise and Gin

Windsor Castle does a great job of showcasing the history of England’s royal family, especially the late Queen Elizabeth’s life, since she spent most of her life living there. They had a part of the castle open to the public; however, you were not allowed to take photos, in there there were 20 staterooms, each decorated with clothing that the queen used to wear and many paintings as well. In the castle they also had a chapel that had the bodies of previous kings and queens so people may pay their respects to, which I find important as the Royal family is seen as something holy that people would want to pay their resp[ect to when they pass such as catholics do with the pope. In the gift shops, they had teacups and tea sets that were made for the coronation of kings and queens, which I found really cool and a good marketing strategy since many British people drink tea and now can with the history of the coronation. I found the tour of Bombay Sapphire to be very interesting since they showed us how the gin is made and had the different ingredients on display that we could see, touch, and taste. Our tour guide was also very funny and kept us intrigued with the story behind Bombay Sapphire. My favorite detail was that when they had bought the distillery, there was a bat nest inside, and that is exactly how Baracdi started out as well, and now they are part of the same company. The speaker for the tour of the Thames River Cruise was also very funny and kept the crowd intrigued, even though he was not a tour guide and just part of the crew, you could tell he was very passionate about the history of the Thames River. This is a great example of people giving their all to something they are happy and passionate about, rather than doing it because it is their job. People are more inclined to do their best if they are invested in what they are doing. As a manager, it is important to keep your employees happy and to make the work culture something that they look forward to. It also provides an aid; if I were to host an event that ties into a historical aspect of some sort, I can have locals who are passionate about their country showcase some of the history.
