Blog 5: Beach Day in Aegina!

Anticipated Arrival

When I read the itinerary and saw that we were going to spend a day at an island in Greece, the first thing I thought of was the beach! I packed my bathing suit and looked forward to this day until it finally came. We took a ferry to get to Aegina, which I have to say felt very luxurious. Personally, it reminded me of my flight with Turkish Airlines that I took to get to Greece, with the reclining leather seats, TV, snacks, and small compartment to put items. Anyways, once we arrived, we were free to do whatever we wanted for about 6 hours. To pass the time, we were tasked with doing a scavenger hunt where we had to take pictures in front of certain landmarks/areas.

I immediately joined up with my friends and the first thing we did was stop at a bakery. For some reason, Aegina had a fixation with pistachios. So, I decided to take advantage of this and order some pistachio macarons which tasted so freaking good. I then noticed we were literally standing right in front of the stops part of the scavenger hunt: Dionysos Pistachio Deli Products! We took a group picture and proceeded to try some delicious pistachio butter. I had never tried pistachio-flavored anything to be honest. If it wasn’t for the fixation that this island had with the particular nut, I would have never gone out of my way to try the pistachio-flavored sweets I did, but I’m so glad because they were absolutely delicious.

ATVs and the Beach

To get around, instead of walking, my friends wanted to rent ATVs for the day. I had never rode one before, so I was definitely excited. Since there were 8 of us, we got 4 ATVs with one person being the driver and the other being the passenger. The streets of Europe were unknown and crazy to me, so I opted to be the passenger. The next location of the scavenger hunt that we were gonna go to was the Temple of Afaia, so we rode around for about 45 minutes or so and honestly we got lost a few times. Ultimately, we decided to go to a beach and save the scavenger hunt until the end. We went to Agia Marina, a beautiful beach lined with restaurants and bars. The only things I didn’t like was that it was a rocky beach and that the water was shallow. Walking into the water was a pain because there were a ton of rocks to step on that were hurting my feet. Also, the water itself was very cold! I have to say it was definitely a nice contrast to the hot weather that day though. We relaxed at this beach for a while and then around 3PM, we decided to head back to the port. On the way there, we stopped at the scavenger hunt locations and took our pictures and videos.

End of the Day

Once arriving back at the port, we were all starving so we stopped at this restaurant called Maistrali. I tend to have this craving for seafood whenever I’ve gone to the beach or I’m near the ocean, so I ate calamari. Then, we returned the ATVs and decided to hang around the same bakery from earlier. We grabbed ice cream, and of course I had to get the pistachio flavor. At 5:30PM, we had to head back to the ferry that would return to Athens. I really enjoyed this day from the whole Greece trip. It was the perfect break from all the museum and archaeological site tours we were doing, and the one time I felt that I was on a vacation rather than a study abroad program.
