Blog 5: Aegina

 Tuesday, June 25

Today was an adventure-packed day as we traveled to the picturesque island of Aegina, renowned for its delicious pistachios. Our journey began early in the morning as we boarded a ferry from Athens. The ferry was more like a boat, and we comfortably sat inside in air-conditioned seats, enjoying the cool air while gazing out at the beautiful sea views through large windows.

Upon arriving in Aegina, we decided to make the most of our visit by renting ATVs, a decision that added an element of thrill to our day. The rental company was thorough, ensuring that we all felt comfortable and confident driving the ATVs by taking us on test drives first. Once everyone was ready, we set off on what would be an unforgettable journey around the island.

Our first adventure was a photo scavenger hunt, which added a layer of fun and exploration to our trip. Equipped with a list of items and landmarks to find, we began our journey, driving through the charming streets and beautiful landscapes of Aegina. The thrill of riding ATVs combined with the challenge of the scavenger hunt made for an exhilarating experience.

As we made our way to the other side of the island, we couldn’t help but marvel at the stunning views and vibrant greenery that surrounded us. Eventually, we arrived at a pristine beach, where we took some time to relax and soak in the sun. The beach was the perfect spot to unwind after the excitement of the morning. We took plenty of photos, tanned under the warm Greek sun, and enjoyed the crystal-clear waters. The heat of the day was intense, but the refreshing sea breeze made it bearable.

After spending a few hours at the beach, we resumed our scavenger hunt, eager to explore more of what Aegina had to offer. We drove around the island, visiting key landmarks and capturing photos along the way. The island’s charm and beauty were captivating, and every turn revealed something new and interesting. From ancient ruins to quaint villages, Aegina was a treasure trove of sights and experiences.

As the afternoon wore on, we began to feel the pangs of hunger. Fortunately, we stumbled upon a restaurant located right on the water. The view was breathtaking, with the azure sea stretching out before us. The food was exceptional, a true testament to the island’s rich culinary heritage. We indulged in a variety of dishes, all fresh and flavorful, and the service was impeccable. The combination of the stunning location, excellent food, and friendly service made for a memorable dining experience.

After our delicious meal, we treated ourselves to some pistachio ice cream, a must-try delicacy on the island. The creamy, nutty flavor was delightful, and we couldn’t resist buying some pistachio goodies to take home. I ended up purchasing two tubs of pistachio butter and a bag of wafers, which were so delicious that they were gone within six days of being home!

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we continued our exploration of Aegina. The rest of the afternoon was spent leisurely driving around the island, taking in the sights and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the port to catch the ferry back to Athens.

The return ferry ride was a chance to relax and reflect on the incredible day we had just experienced. Back in Athens, we headed straight to our hotel, exhausted but happy. The long day had taken its toll, and we were all ready to unwind.

Once at the hotel, we took some time to relax and freshen up.

In the end, today was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and culinary delights. The island of Aegina offered us a glimpse into its rich culture and stunning natural beauty, leaving us with memories that we will cherish forever. As we drifted off to sleep, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the incredible experiences we were having on this trip. Tomorrow would bring new adventures, and we were eager to see what else Greece had in store for us.
