Blog 1 – Predeparture

As I prepare for my upcoming study abroad trip to Prague, I find myself filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. This is a huge step for me, and while the pre-departure meeting provided a lot of great information, I’m sure there are plenty of surprises ahead. Here’s a quick look at what I’m expecting:

Prague seems like such a vibrant, walkable city, and I’m really looking forward to exploring it. From what I’ve heard, the city is known for its beautiful architecture, historical sites, and incredible views, and I can’t wait to see it all firsthand. I’m especially excited about visiting the Christmas markets. Everything from the food to the holiday vibes just sounds amazing. Walking through the streets and soaking in the culture seems like the perfect way to experience Prague.

When it comes to food, I’m excited to try out some traditional Czech dishes, especially since I really enjoy pork and beef. I’ve read that goulash and roast pork are must-tries, so I’m definitely looking forward to tasting those. I’ve also heard a lot about Prague’s beer culture. While I’m not the biggest fan of beer, I’ll still give it a try and maybe even experience the beer culture in a more local way. Beyond that, I know there will be plenty of international food options, so I’m not worried about running out of choices.

Packing for the trip has been a challenge in itself, especially since I’m trying to make sure I’ve got everything I need without overpacking. I’m bringing a suitcase, so I have a little more room to work with. Since I’m from Pennsylvania, I’m used to cold weather, and I know I’ll need layers to stay warm. I’ve packed plenty of jeans, a good sweater, and of course, my favorite wool coat. I’ve also made sure to include warm socks and gloves because, let’s be honest, it’s going to be chilly!

I don’t have a ton of preconceived ideas about Prague, but I’m expecting to be immersed in history and culture. I’ve read that Czech is the primary language, and while I know English is common in tourist spots, I’m mentally preparing for some language barriers. It’s all part of the adventure, and I’m looking forward to seeing how I’ll adapt. Overall, I’m sure Prague will have a unique blend of old-world charm and modern energy.

For me, this trip is more than just about exploring a new city. It’s about growth, learning, and gaining new perspectives. As I work toward my degree in tourism and hospitality, this experience is an invaluable opportunity to better understand global cultures, different hospitality practices, and what makes places like Prague so special. I’m also excited to take in all the new experiences and stories that I can share with others down the road.

I’m ready for this journey to begin and can’t wait to see what Prague has in store!
