Hi, my name is Nicolas Rangel, and I am a senior at FIU majoring in Hospitality and Management. This is my second study abroad program with FIU, and I have to say that my first study abroad experience was one of the best I’ve had as an FIU student. Not only because of the opportunity to travel and make connections with other students and the people I met while traveling but also because of the invaluable experience of learning how the hospitality industry operates differently in every country you visit.
As a hospitality major currently working in the industry, I initially thought there was only one way to approach hospitality. During my first study abroad trip to Jamaica in the Caribbean, I learned that hospitality can be managed differently across various countries.
Professor Dodge, who led my first study abroad program in Jamaica, recommended that I join the program to Prague, Czech Republic. Although I’ve previously visited Europe—mainly France and Spain—I’ve always wanted to explore other countries. Learning about post-communist countries like the Czech Republic and understanding how they have grown over the past 30 years deeply interests me. Additionally, I wanted to study their approach to hospitality management. Before visiting the Czech Republic, I already knew it was one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations, with 30 million tourists in 2022.
From what my family and friends have shared, I know the Czech Republic is an incredibly beautiful country with stunning architecture and a rich history. While some of that history is difficult, it’s something I’m eager to explore. I look forward to visiting museums and historical sites that will deepen my understanding of this remarkable country.
I’m also excited about trying Czech food. Although I don’t know much about their cuisine, I’m someone who loves to try different foods, whether it’s fancy gourmet dishes or cheap street food.
I believe this trip will be an amazing and exciting opportunity. I’m confident it will be a phenomenal experience, and I can’t wait to see what it has in store for me.
